The two striking photographs below were taken by Kate Griffith and Max Model. The fruit was uniformly illuminated with a 635 nm diode laser and the photograph taken with a near infra red sensitive camera though a 720 nm long pass filter. Pigments in the fruit absorb the visible laser light and re-emit infra red light. Anatomical features are dramatically decorated. These photos were submitted to the Optical Society of America (OSA) 2016 annual photo contest, and are posted on their website: "Not too bad for high school students!" |
